Let’s talk about the “Barn Buzz.”
You know the feeling. You rush from work/school to the stable, your phone is blowing up with notifications, you’re listening to a podcast while mixing feed, and you’re mentally drafting an email while picking out hooves.
We live in an age of high-functioning anxiety, and unfortunately, we are dragging it right into the stall with us.
The problem? Your horse is a mirror.
Horses are prey animals; their survival depends on reading the energy of the herd. If you—their leader—arrive vibrating with stress, cortisol, and digital noise, they can’t relax. A distracted rider often leads to a spooky, tense, or disconnected horse.
If you want a better connection (and a better ride), you have to regulate your own nervous system first.
Here is your 5-step checklist to turning the stable back into a sanctuary.
The Barn Recharge Checklist
1. The “Barn Mode” 📱
We aren’t leaving the phone in the car—safety is non-negotiable. If you fall, you need to be able to call for help. Utilize technology to protect your peace. Create a custom “Barn Mode” on your smartphone specifically for the barn. Configure it to silence Instagram, TikTok, Email, and News apps, but allow calls and texts from emergency contacts to break through.
Why it works: You stay safe, but you stop the dopamine loops.
2. Somatic Grooming 🐴
In our rush to ride, grooming often becomes a chore we speed-run. We are missing the best opportunity for “grounding.” Don’t just brush the dirt off; focus on the sensation. The sound of the bristles, the dust rising, the warmth of the horse’s coat. This is somatic processing—using physical sensation to get out of your head and into your body. If you’ve had a stressful day, currying is excellent for releasing physical tension.
Why it works: This is grounding. Rhythmic physical movement pulls you out of your spinning thoughts and into your body. Plus, your horse loves it.
3. Synced Breathing (The Horse Sigh) ❤️
You know that massive, rib-expanding sigh your horse does when they finally relax? Do that. Stand at their shoulder, put one hand on their withers and one on your own belly. Breathe in deeply for 4 counts, hold for 4, and exhale loudly for 6 counts.
Why it works: Long exhales activate your parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” mode). Doing it with your horse builds massive connection.
4. Barn ASMR > Podcasts 🌾
I love a good podcast, but sometimes we need silence to heal. Take 10 minutes to just sit in the stall or paddock while they eat hay. Don’t groom, don’t fix anything. Just listen. The crunching, the snorting, the birds outside.
Why it works: Being present with zero agenda is the ultimate luxury for an overworked brain.
5. The “Slower Than You Want To” Walk 🐎
When leading your horse to turnout or the arena, consciously slow your walk down by 30%. Feel every heel-strike on the ground. Your horse will have to drop their head and slow their pace to match you.
Why it works: Rushing creates tension. Slowing down forces regulation. You are leading with calm energy rather than chaotic energy.
The Takeaway
You cannot control everything that happens in a ride, but you can control the energy you bring to it. Protect your peace, and your horse will thank you for it.
